Lubbock County hail, 2010–2025: when it hits and how big

Sixteen years of NOAA storm reports for Lubbock County, broken down by year, month, time of day and hailstone size, plus what it means for your roof.

The short version

NOAA's Storm Events Database lists 156 hail reports in Lubbock County on 90 separate days from January 2010 through December 2025. Hail was reported in every one of those 16 years.

Most of it is not small: 129 of the 156 reports (about 83%) were 1 inch or larger, and 18 were 2.5 inches or larger. The largest stones on record, 4.5 inches, were reported three times: near New Deal on June 17, 2013, near Woodrow on May 8, 2015, and near Wolfforth on June 23, 2023.

Year by year

The busiest years were 2019 (28 reports), 2025 (22) and 2012 (19). The quietest were 2013 (3), then 2014, 2021 and 2022 (4 each). A quiet year is not a safe year: 2013 had only three reports, but one of them was a 4.5-inch stone.

  • 2014: 4 · 2015: 9 · 2016: 5 · 2017: 5
  • 2018: 10 · 2019: 28 · 2020: 13 · 2021: 4
  • 2022: 4 · 2023: 5 · 2024: 10 · 2025: 22

Which months and which hours

May is the peak by a wide margin, with 68 of the 156 reports. June follows with 35, then April (27) and March (16). Together, March through June account for about 94% of all reports.

Storms here are mostly an afternoon and evening event. 69 reports (about 44%) began between 4 and 7 p.m. local time, so a storm that rolls through after work is the typical pattern, not the exception.

How big the hail was

NOAA hail sizes are estimates reported by spotters, the public and weather staff, so treat them as a good guide rather than a lab measurement. Only 20 of the 156 entries include a property-damage estimate, which says more about how damage is recorded than about how often roofs are hit.

  • Under 1 inch: 27 reports
  • 1 to 1.74 inches: 75 reports
  • 1.75 to 2.49 inches: 36 reports
  • 2.5 inches and larger: 18 reports

Wind is the second risk

The same database lists 159 thunderstorm-wind reports in Lubbock County over the same period, peaking in June and July. The strongest was an estimated 100 mph gust near Shallowater on June 5, 2025. Separately, 96 non-thunderstorm high-wind reports, mostly in March and April, are a reminder that loose or lifted shingles are not only a summer problem.

What to do with this

  • Get the roof looked at before May, when hail risk peaks, so you know its condition before a storm rather than after.
  • After any storm with 1-inch or larger hail near you, check gutters, vents and soft metals for dents, and photograph them from the ground before calling anyone.
  • If you are choosing new roofing, ask contractors for documented hail performance of the exact product, in writing.
  • Keep dated photos of your roof on file. They help any later insurance conversation (this is general information, not insurance advice).
